Po Pin Chau, a designated UNESCO Global Geopark in Hong Kong, boasts a distinctive geological feature known as the staggered hexagonal rock formation. According to the Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark, these formations were shaped approximately 140 million years ago. Many observers find the structure reminiscent of a grand pipe organ. Today, I am excited to share my hiking trail experience from the east dam to Po Pin Chau and back.
Hike details
Distance: 1.78 km
Elevation gain: 96 m
Time: 38 minutes moving time (I think my tracker was not working too properly, the hike itself should be a bit longer, although over all it wasn’t too difficult)
Difficulty: 1.5/5
Upon reaching Pak Tam Chung car park, we parked our vehicle and opted to take a taxi to east dam. Instead of following the popular route that leads downhill towards east dam, where shortcuts are often mentioned, we embarked on our hike from a set of stairs. These stairs guided us to a path that ascended into the mountains.
We traced our way along the trail, following the ribbons carefully tied on the branches. As we neared the summit, a captivating view of the distinctive rock formation emerged in the distance, guiding us towards our intended direction. The path itself proved to be relatively straightforward to navigate, and the scenery we encountered along the way was simply breathtaking. Before we knew it, we had reached our destination in no time at all!
On our return journey towards east dam, we made the decision to take the shortcut. Undeniably, the shortcut proved to be significantly faster, reducing our hiking time by at least half an hour. However, I must admit that I found it somewhat perilous as well. The shortcut involved some climbing, necessitating the use of all fours at times.
Drone shots from DJI Mavic Air
I’ve compiled a brief video showcasing the captivating drone footage I captured at Po Pin Chau and East Dam using my DJI Mavic Air. Sit back and enjoy!
My equipment
- Shot on: OnePlus 7 Pro, DJI Osmo Pocket
- Drone: DJI Mavic Air
Notes
- I highly recommend that all hikers wear long sleeves during the trek, as there are sections where you’ll need to pass through trees and bushes. These areas pose a risk of getting scratched by branches, so wearing long sleeves can provide valuable protection.
