Treat Yourself to Lava Custard Mooncakes from Ralph’s Coffee

With the approach of mid-autumn, the market is abuzz with various vendors offering mooncakes. Coffee shops, too, have joined the trend and introduced their own signature mooncake collections. In today’s post, I am delighted to present Ralph’s Coffee (by Ralph Lauren)’s delectable lava custard mooncakes (流心奶皇月餅). Prepare to indulge in the exquisite flavors and textures of this unique creation.

Encased in an adorable coffee cup lantern, these mooncakes possess a charming feature—a switch located at the bottom to illuminate the lantern. This delightful design element was what initially caught my attention and compelled me to purchase these mooncakes. The combination of their cute appearance and delectable taste makes them a truly irresistible treat.

Taste

True to their name, these lava custard mooncakes live up to the expectation of a flowing custard filling. Ralph’s Coffee has masterfully achieved the desired effect, ensuring that with each bite, the luscious custard cascades like a liquid. In contrast, many other places I’ve sampled in the past have made similar claims about having a “lava” filling, but unfortunately, the reality fell short as the centers were disappointingly solid.

These petite mooncakes boasted a delightful balance of sweet and savory flavors. The egg custard imparted a subtle saltiness that complemented the overall taste without overpowering it. In contrast to the overly sweet traditional lotus seed paste mooncakes, these mooncakes struck a more acceptable level of sweetness, according to my palate. Furthermore, the texture was wonderfully moist, adding to the overall enjoyment. All in all, I found these mooncakes to be incredibly tasty and satisfying.

Price

As anticipated, this box of four mini lava custard mooncakes comes with a significant price tag. The lantern box set is priced at a hefty HK$428, averaging approximately HK$107 per piece if we exclude the cost of the lantern.

While the mooncakes were undeniably delicious, I’m uncertain if I would purchase them again primarily due to the high price point. The cost was on the expensive side, considering the relatively small size of each mooncake. However, I must acknowledge that they provided a delightful alternative to the traditional mooncake brands, and I believe they would make a splendid gift for the festival.
