Lately, I’ve been venturing into various locations in Sai Kung, and Kam Kui Shek Teng was one of the spots on my list. After watching a YouTube video showcasing this trail, I believed it would be a relatively easy hike lasting about an hour. However, my ascent to the summit took around 3 hours, with approximately 2 hours of actual moving time… oops! Nevertheless, the breathtaking views I encountered along the way made it all worthwhile, as they always do!
Hike details
Distance: 6.45 km
Elevation gain: 278 m
Time: 1h 54m (moving time)
Difficulty: 2.5/5
Similar to many trails in Sai Kung, we parked our car at Pak Tam Chung and then opted to take a taxi to Sai Wan Pavilion. From there, the path ahead was clearly marked. We followed a pleasant concrete path that led us towards “Chuitung Au” (吹筒坳). At the intersection, we spotted signs pointing towards Sai Wan and Long Ke. Choosing the direction towards Long Ke, we began the ascent up the mountain. It was crucial to stay attentive and keep an eye out for the MacLehose sign M29. Once we located M29, we ventured into the surrounding trees and bushes, diligently following the ribbons that guided us all the way to Kam Kui Shek Teng.
Standing atop Kam Kui Shek, we were treated to a stunning view of the High Island Reservoir. However, it’s important not to overlook the opportunity to descend to the bottom, where one can capture beautiful photos while perched on a rock, gazing out at the entire High Island Reservoir.
It is important to be aware that there are several diverging paths that lead to Kam Kui Shek. In my case, even though my mapped route seemed clear, I discovered that the path I took to reach the destination was not exactly the same as the one I followed on my way back. However, as long as you diligently follow the ribbons, you should navigate safely and stay on track.
